![]() ![]() Why they couldn’t use the same data they clearly have in both panels is a mystery. In fact if we sort the apps in the Task Manager by name and then compare the list to the other place you can check network usage, in the network settings menu, you’ll see that Chrome appears on the “Network Usage” list and not the list in Task Manager. Maddeningly, the Task Manager still does not display data usage for regular old traditional Windows applications. All the visible apps are either core Windows apps are Windows Store apps. While it’s great this information is right at hand in the Task Manager, you’ll notice something in our screenshot above. (Metered network was a feature introduced in Windows 8.1 to help manage data use on capped/paid data connections, you can read more about it here.) In case your computer doesnt have the latest version of Windows. There you’ll find two columns related to data consumption: “Network” and “Metered network”. You can also access this same menu by pressing the Windows + X keyboard shortcut combination. In the Task Manager select the “App history” tab. To view network usage via the Task Manager access the Task Manager via keyboard shortcut (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC) or type “task manager” in the Start Menu search box. The first method is a holdover from the Task Manager update in Windows 8. None the less we’ll highlight both methods and explain why one offers a clear benefit. There are two ways to natively check the network usage in Windows 10, but we strongly prefer one method over the other. If you need more advanced network-wide monitoring to keep tabs on all the computers and devices on your network (and not just a single PC) we suggest checking out our article: How to Monitor Your Internet Bandwidth Usage and Avoid Exceeding Data Caps. ![]() As such it’s an excellent way to easily check which apps are using the most (or least) data over the previous 30 day window.Īs handy and improved as the Windows 10 network usage apps are there’s an important thing to note: they only monitor, as you would expect, the data consumption for the computer you access them on. The network usage and bandwidth monitoring in Windows 10 significantly improves upon the Windows 8 system by including data for all apps, not just Windows Store supplied applications. RELATED: How to Monitor Your Internet Bandwidth Usage and Avoid Exceeding Data Caps In Windows 8 Microsoft introduced new ways to monitor your network usage, albeit the initial incarnation of the built-in feature was shortsightedly limited to just Windows Store apps (such that if you used Skype from the Windows Store it would count that data but if you used Skype for Desktop, aka “normal” Skype then it would not). My takeaway is that the settings lie about their true state. What Does (And Doesn’t) The Windows 10 Network Usage Monitor Do? Click the Performance tab at the top of the window. To find them, open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc or right-clicking the taskbar and selecting Task Manager. The only real changes made from your steps was making the services automatic on the ZenBook. I have had everything working as planned 5 or 6 times, but it never lasts. That doesn’t matter because I already have access to it without the network, but it is a curiosity. When I did that, the Spin 5 and its USB hard drive became visible on my ZenBook, but the ZenBook itself disappeared. In my case, I’m naming the shortcut as Network Connections. In the blank field, enter the following path and click on the Next button to continue. Check to see whether or not the problem has been resolved. First, right-click on the desktop and select New Shortcut option. Scroll down and search for Network Location Awareness. No changes were necessary because everything was as it should be, but I did stop and start the services anyway even though they said they were running. Press the Windows key and type in Services.msc and press enter. When I look at Advanced Network Settings after the error, Network Discovery is still turned on. Network Discovery was clearly checked as on, but I still got an error message following the reset telling me that it wasn’t. ![]() I also have another Transcend hard drive hardwired to my TP-Link router.įrom my ZenBook the only thing I could see on the network was the ZenBook itself. In addition to my ZenBook, I have an Acer Spin 5 laptop running Windows 10 on my network wirelessly which has a Transcend hard drive connected to its USB port. Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option. I have an Asus ZenBook running Windows 11 Pro.
